The Secret Language of Comics

Wish Granted !

When creating this quadriptych, I had many ideas and stories that came to mind. Some of these stories were peculiar and finally settled on the genie one. What I like about this story, is that usually people would wish for power or wealth, but instead this person wished for his freedom, which I find great ! I was really hoping for a different ending rather than the most cliché ending, leaving readers to be in awe (I hope).

I understand that I did the comic wrong, and planning on re-doing it to fit it’s proper form !

The Tracing of Comics

I decided to use these two images as they both tend to represent a great concept that can be analyzed. In both graphic memoirs, they depict what each certain action conveys to each of the family members. I interpreted as a way to maintain stability within the family.

To be honest, I feel like I could have done more with the essay if I had time to map out the concepts I have. I had a great start but I just feel as f it got weak as the essay progressed. I plan on revising it whenever I have time. But the link will be attached below !

Actions Speak Louder Than Words

In many graphic memoirs, the author has a certain idea that carries on with the comic, or leaves the audience in a state of wondering “why did the author choose to include that ?’ Graphic memoirs that incorporate this element well are Fun Home, a graphic memoir written by Alison Bechdal who gives a recount on her life as well as her dad’s past trauma and how that instance had an impact on the author’s family; and Stitches, a graphic memoir written by David Smalls who explains his childhood trauma and how it was dealt over time. Both these graphic memoirs convey a sense of trauma within the family which leaves the protagonists to be in a cycle of distraught or misunderstood: not knowing why certain actions can have a serious impact. Although they are two completely different graphic memoirs with different stories, they both convey a similar aspect that was alluded to as the graphic memoirs progressed.

Out of all the pages in the graphic memoirs, the two main pages that will be analyzed are pages fifteen through eighteen of Stitches, and page one hundred and thirty-four of Fun Home. On the pages mentioned for Stitches, we get an in depth look at the “language” of each member of the family. For instance, David’s mother’s language would be slamming cabinets, David’s father’s language would be punching the boxing speed ball, and Ted would beat on his drums. The strange thing with these actions is that they tend to be in an aggressive state, consisting of alamming or banging on things. In the case of David, however, he mentions that his language is being sick, as that was what he endured throughout his childhood. What the author is trying to convey is a sense of differenceness between him and his family, and how these certain actions helped deal with certain issues they were facing cumulatively.

In Fun Home, the page that was analyzed was one hundred and thirty-four, the author draws out an image in which each family member is enjoying their own creative mind state throughout the house. For instance, the father is playing and fixing his collection of toy airplanes, the mother is playing piano, and the older sister is playing the guitar. Although they each are being in their own creative space, it can still be dissenting. For example, the author mentions how the more they dwelled into their creative state of mind, the more isolated they will be. This helps convey the idea that the actions they perform can lead to a detrimental effect in the family in the long run.

Both Fun Home and Stitches portray their family in a manner of interacting with oneself and how it correlates with the overall theme of each graphic memoir. Although the emotions may differ in Stitches, than that in Fun Home, they both help interpret their family as not being able to express their intended feelings. Their only way of communicating and maintaining a sense of stability was taking it out on what they were known to do. They expressed what they wanted to express through the actions that were conveyed to each member of the family.

Although both graphic memoirs narrate a story unique in their own, they both share a similarity in expressing their feelings through actions, and this can lead them to a sense of stability, but these actions can have detrimental effects therefore leading to a cycle of distraught or misunderstood.

Hasta La Vista Baby !

I have no idea how to express or say to this but let this particular image speak for itself

Reflection: honestly, I had no idea how this image was brought up. Originally, I was going to use a water bottle and convert into a spaceship, but while I was working on my Japanese 102 project, I noticed something about the plug next to me: the plug looked like a robotic face ! At that point I wanted to make a robot and I figured “why not make the robot muscular” and I wanted a nice background and this was the best bet. I wanted to add the cat bananas in the mix, so I made them the moon, which was pretty creative of me hahaha !

I don’t even know how to express this work piece. I was too scared to even publish because of how wild and out of the ordinary it can be portrayed. After looking at it, I had lots of fun creating it, and I know it going to grab a lot of people’s attention because of how bright and strange it may appear. I did struggle on getting to use the website, but after a few tinkering and maneuvering, I was able to make sense of it and create what I bestow upon you … Hasta La Vista Baby !

My Visual Notes on my Classes !

I present to you … my own visual notes ! I admit, it was a unique approach in drawing out my notes rather than seeing hundreds of lines of texts covering major information. I feel that I can really benefit from this because I am a visualize learner, and I feel like organizing my notes in that certain way will help understand the context a bit better.

Additionally, I didn’t think I was able to map out such certain aspects on the lectures I have note taken into a visual board form. I really enjoyed this activity as not only did I express my creative mind, but also my understanding of the lecture.

Reflection Upon My Essay

Throughout the process of writing my essay, there was a mixture of feelings that were ranging when writing- most of it being stressed. Reason being is because on the pre-writing exercise my professor made us do, I had an entirely different prompt that was not incorporated into the essay. Originally, the concept was going to be me writing poetry in my room and detailing the many things I was writing. Although it is a good prompt to use, I didn’t know where to begin, or how to follow through with it. So, that prompt was scrapped and thus the high school essay story was brought to life.

When I first had my original draft, I didn’t like it at first. Mainly because I focused more on the story aspect rather on the reflection aspect of the essay. In my head I was thinking “does this follow through with what is being asked ?” I answered “no” and began to find ways to have a reflection ending piece. It took time and I finally did after removing words and phrases as well as adding new ones.

Overall, I really enjoyed writing this narrative. It helps detail a point in my life in where writing became the point of interest in my life. Although I enjoyed a sense of writing before the high school essay, what happens next helps shape my interest in writing, and allows me to explore new components of writing !

Drive Me To The Moon !

I present to you … a racecar in outer space ! How I came up with this idea was actually last minute and this is what went down: I was originally going to use my AirPods but I couldn’t figure out what to draw, or how to utilize it. As I was generating new ideas, I noticed my friend had triangular ruler and when I saw it I was like “I can use it as a slide and draw a park !”

I later asked my friend if I was able to use her ruler and she said yes. Upon drawing the line for the foundation of the park, I realized the ruler took up a lot of the paper’s space. As I looked at it, I noticed that it was in the form of a racecar and then I rolled with it ! I later wanted to implement space because why not !

Avatar Design

For my avatar, I decided to draw a panda for numerous reasons. For starters, it is one of my favorite animals as they are adorable and just lovely creatures. The other reason is because in Chinese culture, the panda represents peace and friendship- one of the two things I cherish deeply. As a child, I tend to be the student and person to really care about people and their feelings. As I grew older, so did my values towards friendship and peace. I would try to assist my friends in thinks they need, as well as give them advice or try to cheer them up when they were in need of it.

The panda helps represent a series of beliefs and ideology that correspond with my life. Everything mentioned helped shape the character I am, a character in a book that is still being written. I know I am still growing in terms of mentality components, but I am glad to have been shaped to my present self.
